3 Ways to Maintain a Body Positivity Mindset

Our news feeds are plagued with photoshopped models and cleverly posed influencers; having body positivity can get complicated. Further exacerbated for those in the BIPOC community who have the pressure of white beauty standards despite being the global majority.

Despite how much it may seem like body positivity is just out of reach, we're here to show you that it isn't. Loving yourself the way you are is entirely within your capability; we'll show you how.

Let's get started.

#1: Positive Affirmations

I'm sure you've heard this one to death, but there's a reason for that! Positive affirmations said aloud in the mirror are incredibly powerful. Through them, you can convince yourself of just about anything, as well as reinforce that body-positive mindset daily.

Consider using affirmations such as:

  • I am perfect, just the way I am
  • My skin is beautiful
  • My hair is stunning
  • My eyes are perfect as they are
  • I am beautiful.
  • I am smart
  • I am talented
  • I love my body

You can maintain a body-positive mindset all day by repeating statements such as these in the mirror when you first wake up.

#2: Keep Your Mind on Health, Not Weight

When we're working to reach our health goals, all too often, we make decisions based on what will get us to our target weight quicker. However, this can further aggravate our negative mindset without even realizing it.

So, instead of maintaining a weight-oriented goal mindset, work on making nutritional decisions based on how you'd like your body to feel and what would make you happiest. All over the world, people are of different sizes. There is no weight prescribed to you by your ethnicity or whiteness.

#3: Choose Clothes that Keep You Comfortable

When all else fails, one of the most important things is to feel comfortable and secure. If that means wearing nothing, then have at it! Have a naked day. Within your own space, who says you can't? Alternatively, if that means baggy clothes covering most of your body, that is 100% a-ok too!

Body positivity doesn't come naturally in this fucked up world. Retraining your mind to think that way takes more than a single day. At the end of the day, it is your body and no one else's, so only you know what's best for it. Whether you respond best to positive affirmations, health-based goals, or comfy clothes, nothing is more critical than feeling at home in your own skin.
